Constructing a building isn’t easy. It requires a lot of materials, labourers, money and most important an accurate plan. Yes, an accurate plan is necessary before starting the construction. You need to know the exact amount of money, time, materials that will be required for the construction work. This accurate plan can be termed Quantity Takeoff. By

accurate doesn’t mean that there can’t be errors. It just means that the calculation should be near to accuracy.
Think of the situation when you didn’t give much time to planning before construction. You just estimated the amount of material, money and time as per your experience without looking at the facts. As a result, two things can be possible. Either the work will get extended longer than the estimated time or can be finished before the estimated time. It’s possible that you order extra materials than a requirement or you may feel a lack of materials. Therefore, you must give enough time to plan about the material, money and time, the construction work will take.
Who does Quantity Takeoff in Construction?
Anyone who is going to start construction work whether it’s large or small needs to do it. They should calculate an estimated amount of materials and money they will need to complete the construction. An accurate calculation is very helpful in bidding on any construction project. When you will tell a client about how much he needs to pay for his construction in advance, there are more chances that the client will choose you to complete their construction. Either you are a rail and transportation engineer or a smart city designer, you can improve your bid by doing proper planning about the construction work.
How to do Quantity takeoff in Construction?
They are two ways of doing the estimation for construction:
• Manual Takeoff – In this way, a person calculates everything. He or she collects data on various things and make construction estimation. They calculate the amount of money that will be required for the completion of the construction project. Not only money but the amount of materials required and the time taken for the completion of the construction project is also estimated.
But since these estimations are done by a person, there are chances of human errors in it. Therefore, it’s necessary to do the calculations very precisely to avoid any kind of human errors. Also, this way of estimation takes a longer time.
• Digital Takeoff – Earlier, we don’t have enough technology that’s why the only way of construction estimation was manual takeoff. But now we have computers which can do the more precise estimation. The calculations are done by humans but using modern software. There are fewer chances of errors in this way. But, for a precise calculation, the person doing it should have enough knowledge of the software. Doing the construction estimation using modern technology is less time-consuming. The more accurate calculations you get, the better bidding you can do for a project.
